CLA Chess Club
CLA Chess Club meets on Tuesday afternoons, right after school from 3-4 PM for most of the school year.
We have very good participation, with most of our students attending regularly. Adult chaperones/coaches/dads serving as advisors are also students of the game, so we’re all learning together. Our students are still beginners, but they catch on quickly!
Pastor Chryst, one of our dads, began playing tournament chess in college, and leads the class instruction. Most weeks we begin class with a brief lesson on some aspect of the game. Then the students are free to challenge each other to casual games.
We are well equipped with enough boards and sets for all our players, as well as a number of clocks and a demonstration board.
We end the school year with a Club Championship Tournament. (Congratulations to our reigning champ, Noah!)
We’ve also begun to enter the world of Scholastic Tournament Chess. We participate in Wisconsin Scholastic Chess Federation tournaments, and even host our own event through WSCF.
For more on the benefits of chess in a scholastic setting, see this summary by Dr. Robert Ferguson.
For general chess interest, a good starting place is the U.S. Chess Federation
